CHAPTER 11

Kiara

I took a deep breath. Yup. Deja Vu. Again. What was my life doing? Going in circles?

I just needed to remember that this was different. I had what I wanted. I had my wolf. This was my time to claim what was already mine.

But it was hard to push aside the reminder of the last time I’d felt pretty and dressed up. Dread had been my friend that night. This all felt that way once again. Fancy dress. Fancy hair. Lights strewn not far from the pack house. Food and a party.

“Kiara, are you okay? Devon had to deal with a few things. I’m sorry I’m the one having to bring you down there again. He promised to meet you.”

I nodded at Sarah. “He told me. Cripple Creek is here.” I hiccuped that last word and she was next to me in a blink of an eye.

“Yeah. They are here and yeah, that’s caused a few complications. But it’s all okay.”

I heard her words, but I also had been the one here watching as he’d thrown on his suit and told me to just rest and take my time.

Why did this seem like a replay? I hadn’t given myself time to think about that night much. I didn’t want to replay my old alpha trying to kill me or the fact Nessa had almost won and got my mate. I swallowed.

“I know. It will be fine. It’s just—" I broke off.

What was it? Was it that it just felt like the same damn thing? Yes. No. It felt like something bad would happen. Something bad always happened. My wolf didn’t agree. She seemed to want to be happy, and maybe it was because she was asleep for so many years. Asleep while the human part of me struggled to not break. But here I was. Broken. Or half broken. Devon helped. Saving those girls helped.

“My old pack is here. How do I let that be okay?”

Sarah’s fingers paused from curling my hair.

“Yes. Only the ones that opted to remain part of a pack though.”

I shivered.

“Were there many that didn’t agree? That place was dark and poor. Why would they stay? Or why would they choose to just abandon?”

She went back to curling another strand.

“Some were too old to leave. Devon has allowed some to remain as long as they moved into homes that could be watched over in shifts. Several warriors will be there one week on and three weeks off. But most chose to come here. And few deserted.”

Could I face them?

“Devon doesn’t feel there is any love lost for them, with your old alpha challenging you. He asked to be murdered. They view Devon as the stronger alpha. Most of their wolves have accepted this hierarchy as tradition mandates.”

My hands felt raw as I kneaded them over and over.

“I know that the old alpha always painted this pack, as well as some of the bigger ones, as murders. Blood thirsty and vengeful.”

The reflection looking back at me was clean, beautiful, and strong like a shifter should be.
